About AFSOPRS

Africa, a continent of over 1.4 billion people, continues to face significant challenges in healthcare access, particularly in specialized services such as eye care. Among these, oculoplastic surgery—which includes eyelid, lacrimal system, orbital, and facial reconstructive procedures—is one of the most underserved fields.
Currently, only a small number of trained ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeons (OPRS) are practicing on the continent, many of whom trained abroad. Most are concentrated in a handful of countries and cities, leaving vast populations without access to this essential service.
History and Evolution
The African Society of Ophthalmic Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (AFSOPRS) was initially established in North Africa by pioneering OPRS specialists. Its purpose was to promote the recognition of oculoplastics as a vital subspecialty of ophthalmology across African nations and to facilitate the training of new generations of ophthalmologists in this field.
Since its inception, AFSOPRS has:
-Organized dedicated oculoplastic sessions alongside national ophthalmology congresses.
Fostered informal regional collaboration among oculoplastic surgeons.
Advocated for local training programs to reduce reliance on external fellowships.
In 2025, a major membership expansion initiative was launched, drawing professionals from all regions of Africa. This marked a significant step toward unifying oculoplastic practitioners continent-wide under one professional network.
